When you leave Kaş and follow the famous winding coastal road toward Demre, after about 30–35 kilometers you arrive at Kaleüçağız — a place where history, the sea, and silence blend together like a fairytale. Many people know it only as the departure point for Kekova boat tours, but in reality, Kaleüçağız is a hidden gem waiting to be explored on its own.
Why Should You Visit Kaleüçağız?
Thanks to its natural harbor, the sea here remains calm and almost completely wave-free throughout the year. If you are tired of the open-sea waves that Kaş is famous for, the peaceful atmosphere of Kaleüçağız feels incredibly relaxing.
- History Right in Front of You:
As soon as you enter the village and walk along the coastline, you’ll encounter Lycian sarcophagi from the ancient city of Theimussa. Seeing ancient tombs rising directly from the water creates a mystical landscape unlike anywhere else in the world. - Pure Tranquility:
After the energy of big cities — and even Kaş center — the silence here can feel almost surreal. Goats wandering freely through the streets, family-run guesthouses, and small seafood restaurants preserve the authentic soul of a Mediterranean village.
What Can You Do in Kaleüçağız?
- A Historical Canoe Tour:
One of our favorite experiences. You can rent a canoe from the shore and paddle through the Lycian sarcophagi toward the Sunken City or Simena (Kaleköy). - Hike to Simena (Kaleköy):
There is no direct road connection between Kaleüçağız and Kaleköy. Access is only possible by sea or via a rocky walking trail. Following this path while overlooking Kekova and ancient ruins turns the hike into an unforgettable experience. - The Center of Kekova Boat Tours:
If you plan to visit the famous Kekova Sunken City, this is the ideal starting point. While boats departing from Kaş spend nearly two hours reaching the area, from Kaleüçağız you can arrive in just 10 minutes.
Transportation & Practical Information
- How to Get There?
You can reach Kaleüçağız from Kaş in about 45 minutes by car. Follow the signs toward Demre and turn off near Çevreli Village. Public minibuses are also available. - Best Time to Visit:
During the day, the coastline can become lively because of boat tours, but the real magic begins in the evening. Once the day visitors leave, the village transforms into a peaceful retreat. - Accommodation:
If you prefer charming family-run guesthouses with flower-filled gardens over large modern hotels, Kaleüçağız will make you very happy.
Kaleüçağız is also one of the most beautiful stops along the Lycian Way. Thanks to its protected archaeological status and limited construction, the village has preserved its natural atmosphere and remains one of the most peaceful memories you can take home from your Kaş holiday.
