Located in Demre, about 5km from the center, Andriake was the bustling port district of the ancient city of Myra. Hidden under marshes for centuries, this treasure was revived through meticulous excavation and opened its doors as a museum complex in 2016.
What to Expect?
- The Granarium (Hadrian’s Granary): The heart of the museum. Built during Emperor Hadrian’s reign (2nd century AD), this massive structure now serves as the indoor exhibition space. Across 7 rooms, the social life, trade laws, and beliefs of the Lycian League are showcased with incredible curation.
- The Ancient Harbor & Ship: In the courtyard, a full-scale wooden replica of an ancient commercial ship awaits. You can step inside and imagine the grandeur of maritime trade 2,000 years ago.
- Purple Dye (Murex) Workshops: Discover how the famous “Imperial Purple” was produced here from sea snails. It’s a fascinating look into ancient luxury exports.
- Synagogues & Churches: A crossroads of faiths. Andriake hosts one of the rare ancient synagogue ruins in the region, reflecting a spirit of tolerance.
