Xanthos (Ksanthos) Ancient City Located in the Kınık region of Kaş, Xanthos is one of the most significant settlements of the Lycian civilization. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site alongside Letoon, Xanthos is recognized as the political and cultural capital of Lycia.
A Brief History of Resilience Known as “Arnna” in the Lycian language, the city is famous for its people’s fierce love for independence. According to Homer, Xanthosians fought in the Trojan War. Throughout history, the city faced Persian sieges, Great Alexander’s conquest, and Roman destruction, yet always rose from its ashes until the Byzantine era.
Must-See Monuments * The Theater: A well-preserved Roman-era theater located north of the Lycian Acropolis.
- The Harpy Tomb: A famous 5th-century BC funerary monument west of the theater. Note: The original reliefs are currently displayed in the British Museum.
- The Lycian Obelisk: Located near the Agora, it features the longest known inscription in the Lycian language, detailing the life of Prince Kherei.
