Located right between Kaş and Kalkan, Kaputaş Beach is consistently ranked among the world’s top locations for crystal-clear turquoise waters. What makes this spot structurally unique is its natural formation: a narrow canyon carved through towering cliffs opens up directly into the Mediterranean Sea.
Unlike typical soft-sand beaches, the ground here consists of a specific blend of sand and small shingles. The sea at Kaputaş deepens abruptly within a few steps, and it is known for its playful, powerful waves during certain times of the day. If you are a confident swimmer, these waves offer an incredible adrenaline-infused swimming experience. If you prefer calmer waters, target the early morning hours before the wind picks up.
Our Local Recommendation: The Golden Hour Strategy
Here is our personal hack since we moved to the area: arrive closer to sunset. We never rent sunbeds here. During the late afternoon, the crowds thin out, the intense heat drops, and the massive rock cliff on the right side of the beach casts a perfect, refreshing natural shadow. You don’t need heavy gear; just toss a towel and a bottle of water into your bag, and you are set.
If you are planning a full-day stay with a personal car, arriving early in the morning is non-negotiable. Parking here is a major logistical bottleneck as cars line up single-file along the narrow D400 highway. During the peak summer season, the crowd density remains high regardless of whether it’s a weekday or weekend. However, during the shoulder season, weekdays offer a much more peaceful experience.
Because Kaputaş is a strictly protected natural heritage site, there are no modern interventions like elevators or vehicle ramps to the shore. You have to climb down a significant number of steep steps. The good news is that the municipality recently renovated a portion of these stairs, making the walk safer and more stable.
Years ago, this gorge lacked basic infrastructure. There were only local village women making traditional flatbreads (gözme) and a rudimentary pipe with ice-cold spring water for a quick rinse. Honestly, back then, we often chose to drive home covered in sea salt rather than tackling those stairs just for a shower. Today, a municipality-run cafe and proper shower facilities are available, though you might still encounter lines at the showers during peak hours.

A Note for Families
For families traveling with young children and heavy beach gear, navigating the steps and managing safety can be physically demanding. However, if you plan your timing correctly—either very early or late afternoon—the sheer visual reward of Kaputaş easily offsets the effort. The presence of the municipal cafe also means you don’t have to carry heavy coolers down the stairs.

A Quick Eco-Reminder: To preserve this natural data point for future generations, please carry out whatever you bring in. If the local bins are full, pack your trash back up to the highway level. Let’s keep this water clear.

By Public Transport: Local minibuses (dolmuş) run frequently between the Kaş and Kalkan bus stations. Simply inform the driver you are dropping off at Kaputaş. They will pull over right at the head of the stairs.
